Frequently asked questions
Is OLAV really free?
Yes. The OLAV core platform is open source under the BSL-1.1 license. You can deploy it on any infrastructure at no cost. Enterprise extensions (olav-ent) for LDAP/OIDC, advanced compliance, and multi-team governance are commercial add-ons.
What is BSL-1.1?
Business Source License 1.1 allows free use for non-production and small-scale production use. The code converts to Apache 2.0 after a defined period. Enterprise production use above the free tier threshold requires a commercial license — contact us for details.
Can I self-host the Enterprise tier?
Yes. Enterprise extensions are deployed on your own infrastructure, not as a cloud service. You retain full data sovereignty.
What counts as "enterprise" usage?
If you need LDAP/OIDC integration, multi-team RBAC, compliance audit exports, or SLA guarantees, those are enterprise features. Everything else — including high-volume production use of the core platform — is covered by the Community edition.
